Stainless steel
Stainless steel, known as white iron, is a generic term for an alloy steel typically containing 10%-30% of chromium in metallurgy. “Iron alloy” contains chromium content of more than 10.5% by weight. This steel is not as easily corroded as normal steel. If the chromium ratio is low, an oxide film forms on the surface instead of oxidizing. This steel is not stainless steel but weathering steel. Chromium with low carbon content can show significant corrosion resistance and thermal resistance, but also nickel, molybdenum, titanium, aluminum, copper, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus and selenium form anti-oxidant films on the steel surface to improve corrosion resistance and anti-oxidation in special environments for special performance.
US316 / 316L is added with molybdenum to create a special structure with corrosion resistance. Low carbon is more resistant to corrosion with higher heat treatment, and it is used in chemical corrosion and acid-alkali environments for chloride corrosion resistance better than 304.
